Sector Skills Councils
Commitment is when you are very dedicated to what you do and always be the best you can be, this means putting a lot of effort and working extremely hard. Commitment means that you will need to put many hours in to the things you want to do.

Being committed to your job or the thing you do is very important in the media industry as being in the media industry means that you need to give time to the things you want to do, by this i mean if you want to create a film it takes around 2 years this is why you must always be committed so that it pays off at the end.
i have studied media for the past 3 years and i am currently doing my level 3 in media, last year i finished my level 3 and i achieved a level 2 pass. Trade Unions are a group of people who work with the employee's so that they know what the needs are and they also represent the workers who work in the same specific area. Trade unions are often run by people who work in the same industry and they also work closely with the employers as they need to talk to employers so that they meet the needs of all the workers this can be negotiating the pay.
An example of a trade union would be BECTU as they are a trade union for the media industry and BECTU provides a wide range of services to its circa 25,000 members, including:

Also it would be very difficult for us to go and find the employer because you may work for a big company where the employer is not there, being with the trade union they have meeting regularly with the employer to make sure that the employee's needs are met.

This service will help me in the workplace as i will already have known what the job role involves and also connexions may want me to do a short course which will help me do the job better. i could improve by gaining more experience in my free time so i can develop my skills .
Career Development
Training on the job
Training on the job is when you learn while doing the job role, by this i mean you will be doing the actual job and you will see how other workers work and learning from them, however you may have an experience worker with you so they can actually train you at work.
An example of this may be that you learning how to work as a admin worker for filming productions you may be given training on the job because by seeing workers do the job you get the hang of it and know what to do.
This will help the employers because it can cost a lot to train the employee's and training
on the job is quicker way for the worker to get hang of it and for the media industry there are many jobs which train you on the job for example being a journalist you may be teamed up with another journalist so you know the process, this saves the employers a lot of money.
I am doing my level 3 creative media production and i know have been studying media for over 3 years and i also know how to operate media equipment's like there camera, tripods and the macs to edit with because during my level 2 and level 3 i have done mini filming projects. Also if i wanted to get a job, getting training on the job will allow me to learn faster as i see people do the job.
My skills will help me the workplace as i want to get a job in the media industry so i know what to do and how to. Also getting the training on the job will help me develop me skills and learn faster ways.
Continuing Professional Development
Continuing professional development is when you are in a classroom environment and you discuss about the job and share new skills for jobs which make it easier for you. Also they may organised different workshops so that you learn different skills.
An example of this would be having Continuing professional development meetings about media, this may mean organising an event for the media industry which helps people who work in the industry discuss problems and also learn skills which make it easier.
This issue is very important in the media industry because without helping each other they won't be able to expand and learning new skills may help employee's be faster and more efficient as they are working quicker and getting more of the job done.
At the moment i am very lucky to be doing level 3 creative media production, this course as allowed me to set excel my skills as i have learnt know things, however having Continuing professional development meetings i will be able to gain more knowledge and skills from people who have a lot of experience and knowledge about the media industry.
My skills would help me in the workplace as i know a lot about media and i have made lots of short films in my years studying media, also by learning learning new skills i will be able to do my jobs more efficiently. i could improve my skills by actually working with experience people.
Self-training
Self training is when you learn yourself, by this i mean that you actually don't have anyone teaching and managing you, this means that you can train your self anytime and you manage how much you want to learn.
An example of self training would be you watching other people online how the edit on software's. Many editors started off by making short films and they used online video's to find out how to use the editing software's like imovie. Below is a short video from Youtube we see someone show you how use imovie.
Self-training is very important in the media industry as you cannot be taught everytime or you may not have understood so by watching video's online it gives you better understanding as you can watch it over as many times as you want. Many people who are editors started off self training as they needed to know the basic to develop their skills.
I am currently doing level 3 creative media production course and i have edited many short films on different software's and also i have self trained my self as well because when i first started to use i was very confused how to use program and i wasn't that sure so i wrote on google how to use i movie and the above video. The above video help me a lot as i could stop it when i did not understand, this help me progress and now i know how to use imovie, in the future i could try learning about other editing software's.
My skills will benefit in a workplace because if i wanted to become a editor i already know how to edit on some software's, however i could improve my skills by watching more video's about editing on different software's this will allow me to get more skills, also i can do short online courses about editing this would allow me to get more qualification.
Transferable Skills
Commitment
An example may be a script writer working over night as the are very committed to the job and want they are dedicated to the job as they working even when there not getting paid, this may mean them being promoted.
The reason why i got this grade was because i was very committed to what i did, for example me and partner did some of the work after school which meant us finishing before the deadline.
My skills will help me in the workplace as being dedicated gets you far and often is recognised by the employer which means that them offering you better deals or even promotion as they know you work extremely hard and are always dedicated to the job. I could improve by maybe getting more experience in the media industry, by this i mean doing work placements in media related jobs.
Efficiency
Efficiency is when you complete work to high standard in a small span of time, by this i mean completing work on time and without any mistakes. Being efficient means that you are being productive which is a positive for the employer.
An example of efficiency would be the screen writer getting all the script done by the deadline without and mistakes. However it can be very difficult doing a media related job without any mistake as you need to make mistake to learn from them.
Being efficient is very important in the media industry as you need to be able to meet deadlines and all the work must be finished up to high standards or you may be fired as all the workers in film industry are freelancers so this means that they directors can replace anyone without hesitating.
Previously i have done my level 2 in media and now i am doing my level 3 in media, doing this i have to always be efficient as there are a lot of Coursework as it is a BTEC subject which means that there are no exams, the essays are often very long which means a lot of writing.
My skills will help in a workplace because if i get a job as a script writer you have to write a lot, however me having i have wrote a lot be before so i should be okay, i could improve by writing for a long time period or learning how to type faster which means you can write more in the time span.
Reliability and Punctuality
Reliability is whether they actually have the trust with you, by this i mean do they know if you can complete task, usually look at previous records whether you have meet deadlines. Punctuality is have you been in on time and do you have bad attendance of coming to work.
An example of reliability would be someone who always does the job every time and are always there when you tell them to be. An example of punctuality would be someone who comes in to work everyday and does not have a bad record, also there usually are on time to work.
Being reliable and punctual is very important in the media industry because creating things like films have a tight schedule already and by you not being there it can delay it more this may mean you being fired as you are not reliable or punctual most of the workers are freelancers and don't have an actual contract.
I have done my level 2 and now i am currently doing my level 3, last year i finished my level 2 and achieved a level 2 pass as i was very reliable and puntual, i tried my best going to all the my lessons and i always tried being a head because if i missed a lesson i won't be behind and if i was behind i would go before my next lesson and catch up.
My skills will help me in a workplace because if i did fall behind i would stay extra hours and catch up, as i would not want the company to be effected by absence and also i would always want to meet my target.
Self-presentation
Self presentation is how you personally present your self to be, by this i mean that many people judge you by what you actually wear rather than what you can achieve. i also think that self presentation is very important as it tells someone how you are.
An example of this may be someone wearing a tracksuit to an interview, this would tell your employer you are not serious and do not put any effort in, however if you wore a suit it would tell the employer that you have put in effort and are ready to work and make a difference.
Self presentation is very important in the media industry as it would show you if the are willing to work hard and having the willingness means that they will work hard. Also self presentation tells people your background from your clothes as they will be judge you on your presentation as they do not know you.
I am currently doing level 3 in media and have previously done level 2 aswell, also i will be looking for a job in the media industry as i believe i know a lot about media and if i do apply for a job i will make sure that i dress smartly to the interview and i will also speak formal as it is a place of work.
My skills will help me in a work place as i know a lot about media industry as i have studied for the past 3 years and my self presentation will help show that i am willing to work hard and make a change. I could improve by making my self look better by buying new smart clothes.
Functional skills
ICT
ICT stands for information and communication technologies, ICT is used by everyone as many people use it to do many things from writting letters to making their own websites. Knowing how to use ICT is a very useful skill as it will help you in the future and would help you day to day.
An example of where you would use ICT in the media industry would be the admin team who manages a film production, as they have to write letters using software's like microsoft word or using excel to make a production schedule.
It is very important to have ICT skill in the media industry as an admin you will need to know how to use the computer so at least you would need to know the basic like using microsoft word to write letters for the director.
In my years at school we mostly used computers and i also done ICT as one of my GCSE and achieved a grade B, ICT was complicated at some moments however i knew how to do the basic like use a computer, however i was a bit confused at the end when we had to create are own websites.
My skills will help me in a workplace as i know how to use a computer and i know how to use basic software's like Microsoft and it will i will be able to do computed related work. I could improve my ICT skills by going online and learning new skills.
Mathematics
Mathematics is all to deal with numerical data by this i mean you would be learning about different equations, also you will have many problem solving question. Mathematics is very important as we need to know the basic so we do not get charged extra or given wrong amount back.
An example of this being used in media industry would be the production accountant they need to be good with the mathematics as they will be in charge of the money and where it goes, this means they will need to show all the costs.
Mathematics is very important in the media industry as the production accountant has all the money and if it isn't used efficiently it may mean them not have enough money to finish the film, this is why the accountant needs to know more than the basic in maths as they will have to deal with a lot of numerical data.
I have previously studied maths and i done it for my GCSE and i achieved a grade C, i always found maths very difficult as i was not that good dealing with equations, however i focus more and then got a grade C which i wanted. I think knowing maths helps us a lot as it helps us find the best deals.
My skill will help me in a work place as i know my basic maths so i'll be able to do the basics like adding, subtracting , timing and dividing. I could improve this by doing A level in maths however i am not trying to get a maths related job.
